Answer
·  Just what the heck does 'Dagorhir' mean, anyways?

Dagorhir comes from the Sindarin Elven language J.R.R. Tolkien created for the Lord of the Rings series. It translates to 'Battle Lords'.

From the national Dagorhir page:
A madman named Bryan Weise saw the movie "Robin and Marion" while he was reading "Lord of the Rings." Bryan had never heard of "medieval re-enactment," "Live Action Role Playing," or "Dungeons and Dragons." But he wanted to find a way to capture that spirit of adventure that could only come from wielding a sword or bow.

In 1977, he ran ads on Maryland's underground radio station WGTB that said, "Anyone wanting to fight in Hobbit Wars with padded weapons call Bryan at the following number." Bryan became Aratar Anfinhir the Stormbringer. For the first two years, all battles were woods battles; most included a camp-out the night before. Many battles in the first three years included rain or snow, giving power to Aratar's moniker of "Storm Bringer."

As the group began to grow, a madman Elvish scholar named Celemir suggested the name Dagorhir: "Battle Lords."

All weapons were thick lumps of couch-padding foam duct-taped to sticks. The first prototype of modern Dagorhir weapons (a shaped "blade" of closed-cell foam glued to a fiberglass rod) showed up in 1978. It was in this time that rocks were invented by a madman named Edwin of the Danes, who asked, "What do we do with the scraps of leftover foam? Can we wrap 'em with tape and say they're rocks that only kill you if they hit you in the head?"

·  Is this like the Society for Creative Anachronism?

Yes & No: Dagorhir has a prime emphasis on the combat portion, and less on the roleplaying of kings and queens. The fighting styles differ greatly between the SCA and Dagorhir as well. SCA uses lengths of bamboo as weapons (rattan), relying on padded armor to protect the combatant. Dagohir uses lengths of PVC pipe safely padded, so that armor is not necessary.

In this author's opinion, Dagorhir style fighting is far superior to what the SCA does. Dagorhir has a MUCH lower injury rate in comparison, and at the same time, a new member needs almost nothing to be able to play the game (no vast amounts of time spent making an expensive custom padded suit of armor). SCA members will frequently scof at Dagorhir fighters, but as far as this author has been able to witness, the only thing SCA combat does better than Dagorhir is provide the wonderful ringing WHACK sounds, instead of a dull thump.

That said, there are many many members of Dagorhir that participate in SCA events, and vice versa.

·  What does your chapter name, Talinor mean or come from?

Bortas was a founding member in a Dagorhir group in central Idaho that decided to call itself 'Talinor', because they thought it sounded great. That group slowly fell apart and has not been around for well over 5 years. We decided to call this realm Talinor as well, since Bortas is again a founding member here. Additionally, we needed to get our Dagorhir Chapter Contract submitted, and one question on it is realm name.

·  Why do I have to sign a waiver?

Dagorhir is amongst other things, a full contact sport. All participants should be aware of the potential dangers involved with playing a full contact sport. Additionally, all participants should feel empowered to speak up when they observe dangerous circumstances. This keeps the playing field safe for all of us, so that we can continue to play & fight. Waivers are designed to protect the players and the organization from being sued by another participant.

That being said, Dagorhir prides itself on being a safe sport to play. Of course, it hurts a little when getting hit, but nothing permanent. In fact, it does not hurt as bad as, say, paintball does. Typically injuries are things like twisted ankles, scratches and other normal, minor injuries incurred when running around in the woods.

·  Why can I only use one 'blue' weapon if I don't have a costume/set of garb?

Garb is an important aspect to the realism portion of our style of fighting. It is also a fantastic recruitment tool. Think of garb for foam-fighting as you would a uniform for any other sport. Sure, everyone looks silly going to the store in their gi from karate practice, or their tutu from ballet, or their shoulderpads & jersey from football - why would what we do be any different? Besides, garb is easy to make, and can be done inexpensively.
